It’s nearly September and that means back to school. However, a small but growing number of children aren’t going back, or never went to school at all. For their families, learning can be at its richest outside the classroom and free of the one-size-fits-all approach of mainstream education. But being free of the education system can carry its own challenges: how do you know your child is making progress without a formal curriculum? What about socialisation, parent burnout and long-term outcomes? At a time when school risks becoming part of yet another culture war, our panel debates what works, what doesn’t, and where we can find common ground in making education work as well as it can for all children.
